Apply the free update to Windows 8.1 - that alone will bring back the Start Menu, the Shut Down button, and some other features like being able to run "Metro" apps in a regular desktop window.

EDIT: Looks like MS reneged on that promise - they said these changes would happen in the 8.1 update (which came out in August), but it looks like they pushed those features back until next April - possibly, in Windows 9.
